It's All About the Shag During the SOS Spring Safari

When you think about Myrtle Beach, there are many things that come to mind like the Boardwalk, beach music and endless golf courses. But one of the things Myrtle Beach is best known for will be celebrated from April 20-29 as the SOS Spring Safari returns to the area to perform the shag at the Grand Strand's most popular beach bars and dance clubs!
With ten days of dancing fun packed into the duration of the festival, fans of the shag cannot miss taking a vacation to Myrtle Beach during the Spring Safari!
For those unfamiliar with the history of the shag along the Grand Strand, here's a crash course. In the 1940s, white teenagers along the Grand Strand became infatuated with rhythm and blues music that was only heard at African-American nightclubs in the area.
Many of those teens attended the nightclubs and watched the music and dancing from the balconies, imitating the moves they saw and combining it with the dance moves they already knew. In time, the demand for the R&B sound spread like wildfire to all the clubs around the Grand Strand, forming the beach music scene that still thrives to this day. The dance evolved and slowed down over time to a version more reminiscent to the current iteration of the shag, and the shag is now the official state dance of both North and South Carolina.
During the SOS Spring Safari, scores of shaggers will migrate to the Grand Strand to attend nightly dance events at some of the area's most popular beach music and dance clubs.
On the north end in North Myrtle Beach, the Ocean Drive region is always a popular destination for shaggers, with clubs like Fat Harold's Beach Club, Duck's Beach Club and the OD Arcade and Lounge hosting SOS events and nightly live music and DJs playing the most popular beach music. Even if you're new to the shag, Fat Harold's hosts nightly free lessons to have you and your partner trained in all the steps and moves in no time!
